What is the Level 4 Certificate in Strength and Conditioning?

Strength and conditioning is a multi-faceted discipline within the sport and exercise science arena. To be a truly competent strength and conditioning coach you must understand the underpinning essentials and in-depth complexities of how to support, prepare and protect an athlete — and how to train athletes for optimal physical, technical, tactical and psychological performance.

This qualification covers all the essential aspects of what it takes to be an S&C coach: how to analyse sport and gym performance, carry out essential needs analyses, and plan, deliver and evaluate periodised, performance-related S&C programmes.

You will be assessed and challenged in ways that mirror the real work of a professional strength and conditioning coach — including presenting and defending your case-study programme to a panel of S&C experts.

What you'll study

  1. Unit 1, Module 1: Strength and Conditioning Proposal
  2. Unit 1, Module 2: Case Study with a real athlete
  3. Unit 2, Module 1: Coaching (warm-up, speed and agility drill, plyometric drill)
  4. Unit 2, Module 2: Technical Lifts (high-bar back squat and one Olympic lift)

Entry requirements

A Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, a Level 3 coaching qualification, or a Level 3 Strength and Conditioning qualification (or equivalents). Relevant higher or further education qualifications at an equivalent or higher level are also accepted, for example physiotherapy or sports therapy. Communication skills at Level 3.

How you're assessed

Two units across four modules: a presentation, a written report, an audio recording, video, coaching session plans and practical delivery. The case-study programme is presented to and defended before a panel of PTNE strength and conditioning experts.

Where it takes you

Strength and conditioning roles with athletes and teams across sports.
